THRILLING PROGRAMS AND NEW APPROACH
Inspired by musical experiments and completely new approach YXUS Ensemble sets its goal to accost the audience and involve them into music in a surprising and special way. Thrill and novelty are the keywords that describe various activities of this ensemble. YXUS Ensemble is not just a grop of musicians – it’s like a laboratory for crazy ideas, where musicians, composers, videos artists and directors willing to experiment are involved.
As the predecessor of YXUS Ensemble can be considered NYYD Ensemble, which was formed in 1993 from performing at international contemporary music festival NYYD ’93. The actual size of the ensemble varies according to the needs of the program to be performed but the core of it is a string quartet that started to perform together in NYYD Ensemble. The initiator and artistic leader of the group is cellist Leho Karin. When needed by the program, the very best specialists of contemporary music from Estonia and abroad are invited to join.
Under the name of YXUS Ensemble the group performed firstly in 2013. YXUS Ensemble has given concerts together with conductor Paul Hillier, ensemble Theatre of Voices, the National Chamber Choir of Ireland. But the main field of activity for YXUS Ensemble is modern musical theatre. From 2013 to 2015 YXUS Ensemble organized a series of theatrical performances called “Stockhausen!“. During the series three works by one of the most influential composers-visionaries of the 20th century Karlheinz Stockhausen – „Herbstmusik“, „Tierkreis“ and „Mantra“ were performed.
YXUS Ensemble is driven by the principle that during a performance the audience and performers act as a whole. The audience is not merely listeners but they are indeed completely involved into the performance. The other important principle is that there must be a good balance between emotional and intellectual impulses – both are important and one is not more important than the other.
